Meet the Directors

David James Scott Currie
Director Managing (Johannesburg)

David James Scott Currie has been with Walters & Simpson for 10 years and specialises in commercial projects. He is a registered quantity surveyor and attended Strathallan School in Scotland and studied through the College of Estate Management. His career began in 1964 as a student quantity surveyor at Gibson & Simpson in Scotland. He has two years’ experience as a building contractor and has experience in all aspects of quantity surveying and cost control in relation to office, retail, hospital, industrial, hotel and residential developments. He is a past chairman of the Johannesburg Country Club and a past chairman of the South African Property Owners Association Gauteng Provincial Council.  He enjoys cricket, rugby and golf as well as game and bird watching.

Qinisani Nhlanhla Mbatha
Director (Johannesburg)

Qinisani Nhlanhla Mbatha began his career at Walters & Simpson as a student quantity surveyor in 1995. He has a BSc in quantity surveying as well as a Masters in Commerce Project Leadership and Management from the University of Natal. He specialises in building and engineering projects and has experience in all aspects of quantity surveying and project cost control in relation to office, retail, hospital, industrial, hotel and residential developments. He also has experience in contracts documentation – Fidic, NEC, JBCC and Plant Parts Supply Agreements – and technical advisory to project finance (building and financial engineering). He has four years’ experience with the Industrial Development Corporation as head of the evaluations department and has held directorships at Merafe Resources (Pty) Ltd, African Chrome and Chibiluma South Mines in Zambia. His interests include rugby, jogging, soccer and golf.

Eric Norman Sumnall
Regional Director (Johannesburg)

Eric Norman Sumnall attended the College of Building and Commerce in Stoke-on-Tent, England. He began his career working as an assistant quantity surveyor for the Oxfordshire County Council in 1971. In 1976 he joined the Metropolitan Borough of Wolverhampton where he spent a further five years before joining Walters & Simpson. He has been with Walters & Simpson for 23 years and specialises in project control and viability studies. He has experience in all aspects of quantity surveying and cost control in relation to office, retail, hospital, industrial, hotel and residential developments. He is a former representative on the Midrand High School Governing Body and past treasurer of the Midrand Primary School Governing Body. His interests include photography, birding, motorsport and he is a member of the St. Saviour’s choir.

David Beresford Griffiths
Director (Durban)


David Beresford Griffiths studied a BSc in quantity surveying at the University of Natal. He has been with Walters & Simpson for 27 years and previously worked at Botha, Theron & Kristie. He specialises in project co-ordination and control viability studies.  He has experience in all aspects of pre-contract, viability studies, quantity surveying and cost control in relation to office, hospital, industrial, hotel and residential developments. He is a past chairman of the Natal Chapter Junior Organisation of Association of South African Quantity Surveyors as well as the Association of South African Quantity Surveyors. He enjoys rowing and golfing and is a member of the Durban Rowing Club and a golf member of the Durban Country Club.

Hilton Christopher Rudham
Director (Durban)

Hilton Christopher Rudham completed his BSc in quantity surveying Cum Laude at the University of KwaZulu Natal. He then went on to complete an MSc in construction management at the Heriot Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. He has been with Walters & Simpson for 30 years and his specialties include lenders' consultancy, principal agency, computer applications and development, hospital and medical facilities, and the cost planning and control for interior fit-outs, furniture and equipment. He is a past chairman of both the Quantity Surveying Students Society and the Natal Chapter Junior Organisation of Association of South African Quantity Surveyors. He has been an external lecturer and examiner at the University of KwaZulu Natal.  He is a Fellow of The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors and a member of its university accreditation panel. He has completed appointments as a lenders’ consultant to the World Bank - International Finance Corporation. His corporate social responsibility work is centred on marine conservation and he is chairperson of The South African Association for Marine Biological Research (incorporating the Oceanographic Research Institute) based at Ushaka Marine World theme park in Durban.  His interests include sailing and cycling.

Robert Ross Becker
Director (Durban)

Robert Ross Becker has been with Walters & Simpson for 36 years. He joined the company as a student quantity surveyor while studying his BSc in quantity surveying at the University of Natal. He specialises in project co-ordination and control, commercial and industrial developments and viability studies. He has experience in all aspects of quantity surveying and cost control in relation to commercial, retail, industrial, hotel and residential developments. His interests include being a member and past chairman of the Durban Club as well as a past commanding officer of the Natal Field Artillery. He is also a member of Kearsney College Old Boy’s Club and is on the board of governors at Kearsney College. He is a member of the Durban Country Club.

Nolan Humphries
Regional Director (Cape Town)


Nolan Cedric Humphries attained a diploma from the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors in 1984 through the College of Estate Management of the University of Reading in London. He has been with the company for seven years and was previously managing director at Botha Shelver Inc. He is a registered quantity surveyor and valuer, specialising in cost management, project co-ordination, negotiation, claims management and property valuation. He has experience in all aspects of quantity surveying in relation to office, commercial, hospital, industrial and residential developments. He also has experience in cost engineering on a major upgrade and maintenance job for a large industrial plant, providing a claims management and negotiation service to the in-house project management team. He has been president of the Constantia Rotary Club and a Trustee on the Transkei State Lottery and Sports Trust. His interests include art, the stock market, travel, birding and science.

Paul Nicholas Wilson Osborne
Regional Director (Pietermaritzburg)


Paul Nicholas Wilson Osborne attended the College of Estate Management in London. He is a registered quantity surveyor specialising in public projects, especially hospitals and prisons. He has been with Walters & Simpson for 31 years. Paul began his career in 1964 at Jack Burns Partnership in Blantyre, Malawi as a student quantity surveyor. While studying in London, he was a student quantity surveyor at Harris & Porter. He has experience in all aspects of quantity surveying in relation to offices, retail, public hospitals and clinics, prisons, casinos, hotels and retirement villages. He is a member of the facilities management committee at Hilton College and a past chairman of the Porsche Club KZN. He is also a past captain of the Victoria Club squash team.
